Kees Keus was born in Scheveningen in 1905.
He lived in Laren from 1937 onwards, where he started to sculpt.
He learnt traditional techniques from the painter Wezelaar. Keus was also highly inspired by the sculptor Henry Moore.
After the war he began to paint immediately in the abstract style. In 1950 he moved to Amsterdam, where he co-founded the Creatie group and did much of the administrative/organizational work.
He continued to paint up until 1960. Keus died in Laren in 1987.
